Storyline:

My ability to read Japanese is minimal, at best, so as with any games that rely on lots of text, I'm not able to explain them very well. From what I've seen and what little I've translated, alot of the story centers around reworkings of events in the series. From the title of the game (Legend of the Flying Dragon), I'd assume there is a deeper plot, most likely relating to Ranma's Hiryuu Shoten Ha training, but either I've missed it or I haven't gotten that far in the game.

Gameplay:

Being a Digital Comic, anyone with a hentai game background will feel right at home here:

The four icons in the upper left are Save/Load & Settings, Look/Think, Items, and Walk (to a location). The four squares in the upper right are the people near you who you can talk to. Gameplay consists of choosing people to talk to, places to go, and items to use. There are also simplistic battle sequences scattered throughout the game that are made up of three choices: Attack, Defend, and Special Attack. The basis for it is almost exactly like an RPG.

Notes:

The title screen says this game was developed in 1991, meaning that the anime series had already been airing for well over a year. In fact, all of the music in the game is from the series. Yet look closely at the art style: it's more manga-esque, as if Takahashi herself had done the art. She didn't, of course, but it's a strange note that whoever did chose to copy the manga style rather than the anime style.

Besides the regular gameplay mentioned above, there is an additional section of the game that explains the backstory of most of the main characters, each narrated by Shampoo, Ranma, or Akane. It's nothing too special, but some of the artwork is ripped directly from the manga and colorized, which is interesting.

This rare game was created for the PC98 Computer system, a x86 based system that was very popular in Japan, and not released in other countries. Many anime/manga and hentai games were created or this system and it's predecessor, the PC88. Alot of the Windows hentai games that feature older, 16-color graphics and mouse-driven, in-game menus are actually simply ports of PC98 titles. Most PC98's were 486's EGA graphics and built-in sound cards. Hiryuu Densetsu takes advantage of both its graphical and music power, creating some great visuals and audio... for it's time. The PC88's were 286s and 386s, having the graphical power of about a CGA card. This didn't work too well for games, but that didn't stop people altogether...

Emulation/Availablity:

Disk images of this game have been dumped, thankfully, or else us non-Japanese Ranma fans may never have known about this Ranma-game gem. There are eight disks, and TOSEC has them incorrectly named as "Ranma and half Hiryu Densetsu." The correct file size for each image is 1,269,760 bytes. That should give you a good start to finding them. =)

Anex86 emulates the games perfectly.

Want the actual disks? Good luck with that. I've tried eBay and scoured old gaming sites, and have still come up with nothing. The only way to get this game would be to find an old copy in Akihabara. And even THEN it'd be a lucky find.

If anyone DOES have a copy they're willing to part with, let me know. I'm willing to spend most anything to complete my collection!
